Baja California is a Mexican peninsula extending from the state of California
from the North end, down to the Pacific Ocean at the Southern most tip, and
provides dramatic landscapes and seas. This includes everything from quaint old
mission towns, to dormant volcanoes, and vast and remote deserts. Much of the
peninsula is remote and sparsely or even unpopulated. It is divided into 2
sections. Baja California is the Northern most state, bordering the United
States and San Diego. Baja California Sur is the Southern half of the peninsula
going down to the tip, which is often referred to as "Lands End".
Baja California (the Northern part) became a state in 1953, and has an
approximate area of 27, 071 square miles. Before becoming a sate, it was known
as the North Territory. It is the Northern part of the peninsula, and is divided from the Southern half at the 28th
parallel. The state has a population of approximately 2,844,469 as of the 2005
census, and has now grown to an estimated 3,165,776 as of June, 2009. The
population is composed of Mestizos, which are immigrants from other parts of the
Mexican mainland, and has a large population of ancestry from European decent.
The first people came to the peninsula at least 11,000 years ago and were known
as hunter-gatherers.
Baja California Sur (the Southern part) officially became a state in October of
1974. Before that date, it was know as the Southern Territory. The population of this state, as of 2005, was 512,170, as has been
growing since then. It is the home many of the famous resort cities, including Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, and the fishing resort town of Loreto.
Its largest city is the capital, La Paz, which is also a tourist resort as well
as a landmark and
importation hub. The small pueblo of El Triunfo, located just South of La
Paz on the East Cape, is now just a ghost town compared to it's peak years, when
it was known as one of the largest producers of silver in the world. This
all came to an end in the late 1950's and the town still remains but has never
recovered. It does have a very interesting small piano museum, which
contains many antique pianos brought over on boats from Europe for the rich
Europeans who once occupied the town.
The peninsula, which was divided into two separate entities in 1804, had its
government established in Loreto. It was ruled by colonial governors from
1804-1822.
The country of Mexico is also known as the United Mexican
States, which it is called in Spanish by the local Mexican citizens. Covering
over 760,000 square miles, or almost 2,000,000 square kilometers, it is the 13th
largest country in the world, and the 5th largest country in the
Americas in total area. It is the 11th most populated country in the
world, with over 112 million citizens. It has 31 states with Mexico City also
known as the Federal District, as the capital.
The
culture of Mexico is a combination of the indigenous culture, and that of the
culture of Spain, due to its colonization of Mexico for over 300 years. There
are also elements that have come from the United States that blend into the
Mexican culture.
Today this peninsula is the home of many vacation homes, villas, and condos, and
is a popular tourist destination. With this website you will be able to
